Seasonal Pest Calendar: What Central Maine Homeowners Need to Know

Central Maine's dramatic seasonal shifts create a revolving door of pest activity. Each season brings different pressures, and understanding the cycle is the best way to stay ahead of infestations before they start.

At Campbell's Pest Control, we've been helping homeowners across the region manage these seasonal patterns for years. Here's what to expect and when to take action.

Spring (March - May): Ants, Ticks, and Emerging Insects

As snow melts and temperatures rise, ants are the first to make their move. Carpenter ants that overwintered in wall voids become active and start foraging. Pavement ants push up through cracks in foundations and garage floors.

Spring is also when tick season begins in earnest. Deer ticks carrying Lyme disease become active as soon as temperatures stay above freezing. If you have pets or kids who spend time outdoors, early-season tick and mosquito yard treatments are critical.

Our general pest control service is designed to catch these early-season invaders before populations explode.

Summer (June - August): Mosquitoes, Wasps, and Cockroaches

Summer is peak pest season. Mosquito populations surge near standing water — a major concern for lakeside properties in Belgrade, Oakland, and Rome. Wasps and hornets build nests under eaves, in attics, and inside wall cavities.

German cockroaches thrive in summer heat, especially in kitchens and commercial food service settings. If you spot even one, there are likely dozens more hiding nearby. Restaurants and landlords in Waterville, Skowhegan, and Bangor should be especially vigilant during these months.

Fall (September - November): Rodents Move Indoors

As nights get colder, mice and rats start looking for warm shelter — and your home is their top choice. Fall is the most important time for rodent exclusion, which means sealing gaps, cracks, and entry points before they get inside.

Stink bugs, boxelder beetles, and other occasional invaders also seek warmth in fall, clustering around windows and doorframes. While they're mostly nuisance pests, large numbers can be overwhelming.

This is also a good time to evaluate your attic insulation. Damaged or contaminated insulation from past rodent activity should be replaced before winter to improve energy efficiency and air quality.

Winter (December - February): Mice, Rats, and Bed Bugs

Winter pest activity happens almost entirely indoors. Mice and rats that found their way in during fall are now breeding inside your walls and attic. You may hear scratching at night or find droppings in cabinets and pantries.

Bed bugs are a year-round problem but often spike during holiday travel season when they hitchhike on luggage between homes and hotels.

Properties in Palmyra, Newport, Pittsfield, and Hartland — where older homes with fieldstone foundations are common — tend to see the highest winter rodent pressure.

Year-Round Protection Is the Best Strategy

Rather than reacting to each season's pests individually, many of our customers opt for ongoing maintenance plans that provide year-round coverage. This proactive approach catches problems early and costs less than emergency treatments.
