Pest Control in Skowhegan, Maine

What pest control looks like in Skowhegan

As the county seat of Somerset County, Skowhegan has a mix of residential neighborhoods, historic homes, and commercial properties — all of which can attract pests. We provide comprehensive pest control throughout Skowhegan, from the downtown area to the surrounding rural properties.

Downtown and the historic houses near the Kennebec are mouse and carpenter-ant jobs more often than new construction. We inspect sills, bulkheads, and porch undersides first.

Commercial kitchens off Water Street get the cockroach protocol, not a general spray. Say restaurant or apartment on the form.

Rural lots toward Canaan and Madison add ticks and mosquitoes. Those are yard treatments on their own schedule.

Kennebec River town and county seat

Skowhegan grew where the Kennebec River drops over Skowhegan Falls and splits around Skowhegan Island. By the 1800s the riverbanks held a paper mill, sawmills, woolen and flour mills, axe and scythe factories and a shoe factory, and the downtown blocks and houses built for that workforce are still standing. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put about 23 percent of Skowhegan's housing before 1940 and roughly 39 percent before 1960. Older homes near the river tend to have damp cellars and old sill wood, which is what carpenter ants look for, and they give mice plenty of ways in.

At about 60 square miles, the town runs well beyond downtown. Wesserunsett Stream drains its northern side, and Loomis Hill rises to 870 feet. Every August the Skowhegan State Fair, the oldest continuously held state fair in the country, fills the fairgrounds with livestock barns, feed and food vendors, which draws rodents and stinging insects.

Somerset County has one of the highest tick-disease rates in Maine. Its preliminary 2024 Lyme disease rate was 344.8 cases per 100,000 residents, compared with 230 statewide. Skowhegan was also on the Maine Forest Service's December 2022 list of towns with significant browntail moth populations. Browntail caterpillar hairs cause a rash, though the population has dropped sharply across Maine since 2024.
