Pest Control in Rome, Maine

What pest control looks like in Rome

Rome's wooded, lakeside setting around Great Pond makes it an ideal community — but the surrounding forests bring ticks, mosquitoes, and wildlife close to home. We provide reliable pest control for Rome's seasonal camps and year-round residences.

Great Pond camps in Rome are a seasonal map: mosquitoes off the water, ticks in the trees behind the cottage, carpenter ants in old screen porches, mice when the place is shut for the week.

Year-round houses get the same crew as Belgrade and Oakland. Tell us if the driveway is seasonal so we do not schedule a mud-season visit you cannot use.

Rome is the quiet end of the Belgrade Lakes loop. If the address is actually Belgrade or Oakland, use those pages.

Rome: one-fifth water and mostly seasonal camps

Rome covers 31.7 square miles, and 6.3 of them are water, including the northern ends of Long Pond and Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes chain. Few towns in central Maine have that much water for their size. Settled around 1780 and described in the 1800s as a farming town with one sawmill, one gristmill and one shingle mill, Rome is now mostly camps. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 count about 1,010 homes, and about 43 percent of them are held for seasonal or occasional use.

That is the key pest issue in Rome. A cottage closed from October to May has the same things mice need all winter: shelter, dry nesting material in cushions and mattresses, and nobody around to notice them. Camps built on posts or piers with open crawl spaces make it easy for mice to get in. Wood that stays damp from shoreline shade and moisture off the ponds is where carpenter ants start. Keeping mice out means sealing the camp before it is closed, not after it is opened in spring.

The woods between the ponds are good tick habitat. Kennebec County reported about 230 Lyme disease cases per 100,000 people in 2024, according to Maine CDC, and anaplasmosis is also found in the county. Rome was on the Maine Forest Service's 2023 list of towns with significant browntail moth populations, so it is worth checking any oaks or apple trees near a deck or dock for winter webs.
