A lake town where many houses sit empty all winter

Belgrade covers about 58 square miles, and nearly 15 of them are water: Great Pond, Long Pond, Messalonskee Lake and part of North Pond. The town was first settled in 1774 and incorporated in 1796. Today it has three villages, North Belgrade, Belgrade Depot and Belgrade Lakes. Census Bureau estimates count about 2,400 housing units for a population of roughly 3,350. More than 1,000 of those units, around 43 percent, are held for seasonal or recreational use.

That seasonal share shapes pest problems here. A camp that sits closed from October to May is shelter with no one inside to notice anything. Deer mice and white-footed mice nest in drawers, mattresses and insulation. Red squirrels and flying squirrels get into attics. Owners often find the damage in spring, not while it is happening. Camp wood near the water stays damp, so carpenter ants settle into sills, decks and porch posts.

Shoreline brush, leaf litter and the paths down to the docks are prime tick habitat. Kennebec County recorded 295 probable Lyme disease cases in 2024, and Maine CDC's monthly figures peak in June through August, the same weeks the camps are full. Coves and wetlands along the lakes also breed mosquitoes, and these waters are among the largest in the county.
