Pest Control in Canaan, Maine

What pest control looks like in Canaan

Canaan's rural character and wooded properties make it prime territory for ticks, mosquitoes, and rodents. We provide seasonal yard treatments and year-round pest management to keep Canaan families safe and comfortable in their homes.

Wooded Canaan lots are tick and mosquito country in summer and mouse country in October. We split those into yard work and exclusion so one visit does not pretend to be the other.

Skowhegan is the next town toward the county seat. Palmyra is the other direction. We pair Canaan with whichever loop we are already on.

If the property is a camp, say so. Empty midweek buildings need a different mouse plan than a house with dogs in the yard.

Canaan: newer homes, mobile homes and a fast-rising tick count

Canaan was already settled by 1790, when the first federal census counted 132 people, and its population peaked around 1860. Most of the town you drive through today is much newer than that history suggests, though. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the median home in Canaan at 1991, one of the youngest housing stocks in this part of Somerset County, and close to three in ten homes are mobile or manufactured homes.

That mix changes where pests get in. A manufactured home's weak points are the skirting, the gaps around plumbing and ductwork where they pass through the floor, and the crawl space underneath, which stays sheltered and dry all winter. Mice that get under the skirting in October can reach the insulation in the belly wrap and move up along the pipes. The roughly 14 percent of Canaan homes built before 1960 have the older farmhouse problems instead: stone foundations, gaps at the sill and wood that stays damp enough for carpenter ants.

Canaan is mostly woods and fields with about one square mile of water, and it borders Skowhegan, Pittsfield and Clinton. Ticks are a real concern here. Maine CDC reports that Somerset County's Lyme disease rate rose from 73 per 100,000 people in 2020 to about 345 in 2024. Canaan was also on the state's 2023 list of towns with significant browntail moth populations, even though populations have fallen sharply since then.
