Old city housing on the Penobscot

Bangor grew up as a lumber port on the Penobscot River, and much of its housing still dates from that era or soon after. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the median year a Bangor home was built at 1954, with about 41 percent of housing units built before 1940. That is a far older housing stock than most towns around it. Older multi-family houses and brick blocks share walls, pipe chases and basements, so mice and cockroaches can move between units in ways they cannot in a detached house.

The city is not all pavement. The Bangor City Forest covers roughly 650 acres with close to 10 miles of trails, and it borders the Orono Bog, a 600-acre bog shared with Orono. Kenduskeag Stream runs through the city to the river. Neighborhoods that back onto these woods and wet ground see more ticks and mosquitoes than downtown does. Penobscot County reported a preliminary Lyme disease rate of 162.6 cases per 100,000 residents in 2024, so tick checks after a walk in the City Forest are worth the habit.

Winter is long here. Bangor averages 18.5°F in January and has recorded minus 32°F, and mice start looking for warm walls in the fall. Browntail moth was also active in the city recently: Bangor was on the Maine Forest Service's December 2022 list of towns with significant browntail populations, though numbers statewide dropped sharply in 2024 and 2025.
