Maine homes face a wide variety of unwanted pests throughout the year. From ants marching through your kitchen to spiders in the basement, these invaders can damage property and create health concerns for your family.

Signs you need general pest control
Carpenter ants leave the clearest evidence. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension calls coarse sawdust a sure sign, usually piled under a window sill, a door frame, or a basement beam. Other clues are large ants around the kitchen sink and counters in spring, a hollow sound when you tap a suspect board, and faint rustling inside a wall. Carpenter ants are most active between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., so a flashlight check late at night often shows a trail running back to the nest.
Tiny gray or white insects that jump in a damp basement or in houseplant soil are usually springtails. They are harmless and do not bite, but indoors they point to extra moisture. Flies gathering at attic or upstairs windows on warm winter days are often cluster flies that moved into the walls in late summer to overwinter.
What affects the cost of general pest control
The biggest factors are which pest you have, how many kinds, and where they are coming from. Ants foraging in from an outdoor nest are a different job from a colony living inside a wall. Home size and the length of the foundation perimeter matter when both the interior and the exterior need treatment, and a business is priced differently from a house.

How to prepare for a visit
Write down where and when you see the pests, and if you can, keep one in a sealed bag or take a clear photo. Identification decides the treatment. Clear a path to the basement, under the sinks, the sill plate, and the attic hatch so the inspection can reach the places pests use.
Hold off on store-bought sprays in the days before the visit. An ant trail is useful because it leads back to the nest. Also note any leaks or wet spots around the chimney, roof, gutters, windows, or doors. Extension guidance ties carpenter ant problems to moisture in exactly those places.
