Maine summers are short. Mosquitoes can carry West Nile and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Ticks carry Lyme, anaplasmosis, and other illnesses that affect people and pets.
Seasonal yard barrier treatments target where these pests live and breed — shade, tall grass, brush lines, tree canopies, and standing water.
Ongoing seasonal programs and one-time event sprays for graduations, weddings, or cookouts are both available. Treatments are effective and safe for children and pets when applied as directed.
Signs you need mosquito and tick control
The plainest sign is finding ticks on people or pets after time in your own yard, not after a hike. The UMaine Tick Lab lists where to check: in and around the hair, in and behind the ears, the back of the neck, armpits, belly button, waistline, groin, behind the knees, and between the toes. Dogs that keep bringing ticks in after walking the yard edge are telling you the same thing.
Yards that meet woods, stone walls, brush piles, or leaf litter hold more ticks. For mosquitoes, look for bites in the evening and on overcast days, when UMaine says they are most active, and for anything that holds water: tires, cans, buckets, birdbaths, and tree holes. Mosquito larvae need water to become adults.
What affects the cost of mosquito and tick control
Price depends mostly on the size of the treated area and how much of it is edge habitat: wooded borders, brush lines, and shaded beds take more product and time than open lawn. A one-time event spray is priced differently from a seasonal program with repeat applications. Standing water on the property, fenced or gated sections, and a fixed event date also factor in. Why it matters in Maine
The deer tick, also called the blacklegged tick, is the tick Mainers run into most, according to the UMaine Tick Lab. It carries all five tickborne diseases found in the state: Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Borrelia miyamotoi disease, and Powassan encephalitis. Maine recorded its first Lyme case in 1986 and the count has risen since. Maine has about fifteen tick species in all, including the American dog tick and the woodchuck tick.
UMaine Extension notes that the mosquitoes that can carry Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile are mostly species that feed on birds. A yard treatment lowers the numbers where your family spends time. It does not replace daily tick checks, and UMaine advises seeing a doctor promptly if you suspect a tickborne illness.
