Mice and rats squeeze through small openings, contaminate food, chew wiring, and spread disease. Squirrels and bats damage attics, soffits, and insulation.
We do not just set traps. We identify how animals are getting in, remove the existing population, and seal entry points so they cannot come back.
For squirrels and bats we use humane removal that complies with Maine wildlife regulations, then secure the structure.
Signs you need rodent control
Look for droppings along walls, in cabinet corners, and in drawers, plus fresh gnaw marks and tracks, which UC Integrated Pest Management says show where mice are active. Nests are wads of finely shredded paper or other fibers, often behind stored boxes, in garages, or near woodpiles. A musky odor in a closed room or cupboard is another common sign. Mice are mostly active at night, so scratching in the ceiling or walls after dark is worth taking seriously.
Then check the outside of the house. A mouse can squeeze under a gap 1/4 inch tall and through an opening 3/8 inch wide, so look at pipe and wire penetrations, dryer vents, garage door corners, and the sill where the siding meets the foundation.
What affects the cost of rodent control
Exclusion is usually the largest part of the price. It depends on how many entry points the house has, where they are, and what each one needs. UC IPM notes that foam, rubber, vinyl, wood, and plastic screening can be chewed through, so gaps need metal, concrete, or similar material. Roofline and soffit openings mean ladder work, and a tight crawlspace or attic slows the job.
Other factors are the size of the population, how many trap checks it takes, whether squirrels or bats are involved, and whether soiled insulation has to come out. The inspection is free, and the price comes before work starts.
What happens after treatment
Once the animals are out, the droppings and nests still carry risk. The CDC says not to sweep or vacuum them, because that puts virus particles in the air. Open doors and windows for 30 minutes first and stay out while the space airs. Wear rubber or plastic gloves, soak droppings and nesting material in a fresh mix of 1.5 cups of household bleach per gallon of water for 5 minutes, then wipe it up with paper towels. Heavy infestations call for coveralls, eye protection, and a HEPA-filtered respirator.
After sealing, watch for fresh droppings. New ones mean an opening was missed, and a follow-up visit will find it.
