Cockroaches

German cockroaches thrive in kitchens and bathrooms, reproducing rapidly and posing serious health risks.

About Cockroaches in Central Maine

German cockroaches are the most common cockroach species found in Maine homes and restaurants. They prefer warm, humid environments close to food and water — kitchens and bathrooms are their primary habitats. A single female can produce up to 400 offspring in her lifetime, meaning a small problem can become a major infestation in weeks. Cockroaches are nocturnal; if you see them during the day, the infestation is likely severe. They contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria, and their shed skins and droppings are major asthma and allergy triggers, especially in children.

Signs of Cockroaches

  • Small dark droppings that resemble coffee grounds or black pepper
  • A musty, oily odor in kitchens or bathrooms
  • Seeing live cockroaches, especially at night when lights are turned on
  • Egg casings (oothecae) — small brown capsules found in cabinets or behind appliances
  • Smear marks along walls and countertops

Prevention Tips

  • Keep kitchen surfaces clean and free of food residue
  • Fix all plumbing leaks — cockroaches need water to survive
  • Seal cracks around pipes, baseboards, and cabinet gaps
  • Store food in airtight containers and don't leave pet food out overnight
  • Take out garbage regularly and use bins with tight-fitting lids
  • Reduce cardboard clutter — cockroaches eat the glue in corrugated cardboard
