Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers that feed on blood at night, causing itchy bites and significant stress.

About Bed Bugs in Central Maine

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that feed exclusively on blood — usually while you sleep. They are expert hitchhikers, traveling on luggage, clothing, used furniture, and even in library books. Once established, they hide in mattress seams, box springs, headboards, and cracks in furniture during the day and emerge at night to feed. Bed bug infestations have nothing to do with cleanliness — they can be found in five-star hotels and spotless homes alike. Their bites cause itchy red welts, and infestations cause significant psychological stress and sleep disruption. DIY treatments are almost never effective because bed bugs are resistant to most over-the-counter products.

Signs of Bed Bugs

  • Waking up with itchy red bites in a line or cluster pattern
  • Small blood spots on sheets or pillowcases
  • Tiny dark fecal spots on mattress seams, headboards, or walls
  • A sweet, musty odor in the bedroom
  • Live bugs (about the size of an apple seed) in mattress seams or crevices
  • Shed skins or eggshells in bed frame joints and furniture cracks

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect hotel rooms before unpacking — check mattress seams and headboards
  • Keep luggage on hard surfaces or in the bathtub when traveling
  • Wash and dry travel clothing on high heat immediately after returning
  • Inspect and avoid used furniture, especially mattresses and upholstered items
  • Use mattress and box spring encasements
  • Reduce clutter near sleeping areas to limit hiding spots
