Bald-faced hornets build enclosed, football-shaped paper nests in trees, shrubs, and on eaves that can grow to the size of a basketball by late summer. A mature nest can hold 400–700 workers that aggressively defend it. They are most dangerous in late summer and early fall, when colonies peak.
