Pantry Pests

Indian meal moths, weevils, and grain beetles infest stored food — particularly common in older Maine homes.

About Pantry Pests in Central Maine

Pantry pests include Indian meal moths, flour beetles, rice weevils, grain beetles, and drugstore beetles — all of which infest stored dry goods in your kitchen and pantry. Indian meal moths are the most common, recognizable by their distinctive coppery-brown wing tips. Their larvae spin silken webs through flour, cereal, pasta, pet food, birdseed, and dried fruit. Weevils bore into individual grains of rice, wheat, and corn. These pests often enter your home already hiding inside store-bought products, and a single infested item can spread to your entire pantry. Older Maine homes with deep pantries and bulk food storage are especially susceptible. By the time you notice moths flying around your kitchen, the infestation is usually well established.

Signs of Pantry Pests

  • Small moths flying in the kitchen, especially near cabinets and lights
  • Fine webbing or silk threads in flour, cereal, or other dry goods
  • Tiny beetles or worms inside food packages
  • Small holes in sealed food packaging
  • A stale or musty odor in stored food products
  • Clumping in flour or grain products

Prevention Tips

  • Store all dry goods in airtight glass, metal, or heavy plastic containers
  • Inspect groceries before putting them away — check packaging for damage or webbing
  • Rotate stock and use oldest items first (first in, first out)
  • Clean pantry shelves regularly, including cracks and crevices
  • Don't mix new food with old food in storage containers
  • Keep pet food and birdseed in sealed containers, not in original bags
